fabchannel

Fab

Fab channel is the perfect website for agraphobic music-fans, but it's quite fun for the rest of us as well.

It streams live gigs and archives them through artist and track. There isn't much on their yet (besides Lily Allen and Michael Franti) but no doubt it will grow.

Little Miss Sunshine... genius

On the RoadYes, we're a little behind, but last night along with some buddies, Zo and I watched Little Miss Sunshine for the first time. It's easily the best film I've seen this year... actually I think it's the only film I've seen this year... it's the best film I've seen in a very long time.
For those that haven't seen the film (and for those that have who are vaguely interesting in my opinions), for me it's a tail of failure. What makes the film is that it goes beyond the usual rhetoric of 'life's s**t and then you die', by emphasising that failure is a part of life, it makes us who we are and gives us a greater grasp of the world around us, hence Franks moment of revelation, "Failure is often a gateway through which we must pass in order to receive our greatest gifts."

What's left?

Having just popped myself onto Facebook I was asked to describe my political views, I went for 'Very Liberal'. I think I stand by that, but Nick Cohen's article in the Guardian yesterday does hold some massive challenges for those of us that place ourselves on the political left;

The fall of socialism "has freed them [the left] to go along with any movement however far to the right it may be, as long as it is against the status quo in general and, specifically, America...intellectuals in particular are ready to excuse the movements of the far right as long as they are anti-Western."

I found Cohen's article difficult to read not just because it's extremely lengthy but because I realised that I am guilty. I have blogged so many times about the lies we were fed over the war and the mistakes that Bush and Blair have made, but I struggle to remember a single post denouncing militant Islam.

I guess one way of explaining that would be that, like fair trade, this is just one of the things that I'm passionate about. My worry is that my passion is not that of a libertarian but one of anti-Americanism.

And if it all happened again today?

Just stumbled over this picture: think Banksy may be behind it.

Rocky's back and fighting for Jesus

I've Stallonesylvesterrockyarms3700761 always been a big Rocky fan (too big some might say!) and now [c/o today's Observer] I know why. It turns out he's actually a metaphor for Jesus;

'In one of the strangest twists in Hollywood history, Stallone is selling Rocky VI as a Christian parable of rebirth and redemption akin to Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, which stunned the film industry by showing profit in religious movie-making. A trailer, 'Fight for the Faith', is aimed at Christians while promotional packs explain how to use the film to teach Christian values, with tips for using Rocky in sermons.

During phone-ins with evangelical groups Stallone has spoken of being born again. 'The Church is the gym of the soul. [Rocky's] very, very forgiving. There's no bitterness in him. He always turns the other cheek and it's like his whole life was about service.'

How very bizarre!

John Prescott

Whether you're a politics fan or not, John Prescott's performance at Prime-Minsters question time is the best thing to happen to British politics certainly in my lifetime. Forget Gordon Brown: value-for-money, laugh-a-minute Prescott for PM!!!
Non-UK based readers should be informed that unfortunately not all parliamentary debates are quite this exciting!

A quick web 2.0 competition

Web2big745097Just returning from a day trip to london, the highlight of which was a discussion group with people in similar roles at various NGOs around the topic of 'Reaching Youth Online'. It was a really interesting conversation which will hopefully stimulate some thinking about how we (Traidcraft) get more young peeps involved in fair trade. Anway, I haven't done a competitive post for too long, so here is the games. Click on the adjacent picture and see how many of the Web 2.0 applications you recognise. The one who gets the most gets some fair trade goodies... no cheating!

P.s. I got about twelve!

Black Gold

Black Gold Movie

Black Gold isn't fully released in UK cinemas until next March, but fair trade enthusiasts should check out the advance screenings that are showing around the UK throughout November. The film is about the Ethiopian coffee industry and Starbucks reportedly gets it in the neck; unsurprisingly it turns out they're not as ethical as their publicity would suggest.

Lots more including a fine forum over on the Black Gold website

P.s. sorry about the typos on my previous post. The lesson is if you need to rush a post, don't post at all!
