headwayyouth- phil smith's blog: Headway Exec- Day 1

Well for those of you that don't know this blog operates under the auspices of Headway, an organisation which i sit on the executive of. Anyway it's the bi-annual exec meeting over the next couple of days and it's going well. Today we discussed the issue of human sexuality because at this summers meeting of methodist peeps (conference) there is gonna be a report on the journey which has been travelled regarding this issue since it made these statements in 1993- this press statement came out about the report on the methodist church website.

I'm not completely sure of my stance on the issue. i think there are so many complexities that often people on either extreme fail to appreciate, but i was really encouraged by our discussion today- details of which will follow in the next edition of headline (due to come out mid-june i think). One line of thinking which has really helped me is that of the campolos. If you don't know tony and peggy campolo disagree on the issue, Tony taking the more conservative stance, Peggy less so, but the thing is that they both feel they can afford to disagree on it and i think there is a maturity to that approach. In tony's first address he raises a key issue, he says evangelicals are willing to accept people who doubt the ressurection because we need to be inclusive, we are willing to accept people who doubt the authority of scripture because we need to be inclusive, but then we come to the issue of sexuality and suddenly everyone yells "we need to draw the line somewhere!" If there's gonna be schism, it shouldn't be about this issue is basically what he is saying and i think i agree... so let's hope in the methodist church and all others, that it doesn't come to that.
