Just read in the Times about about a group of ultra conservatives Christians (knowns as Scottish Christians) who, having received an anonymous donation of £500,000, are planning to field candidates against every Members of the Scottish Parliament in 2007. The party "aims to fill the "moral gap" which deters many Christians from voting" and will "scrutinise MSPs’ voting records on issues such as abortion, euthanasia, homosexual rights and the controversial family bill, which will lead to quicker divorces".
Although I doubt whether these are the issues that Christians should be speaking up about, I wonder if there is anything in this idea. Presuming the idea of an established church is going down the drain (not a bad thing in my opinion) sooner or later the church is going to have to figure out what role it plays in politics. Up to now the church tends to lobby the government and have a few good soldiers working inside political-parties, but i wonder if this idea of a radical alternative has any idea. Maybe it would work better on a local level, where Christians could work in partnership with faith communities to campaign for justice and against the rampage of multinational industries in the local community- a little idealistic perhaps!
