a) people still have some interest in the bible- they (like most of us) just can't be bothered with the boring/dodgy bits (family trees, measurements and bloody battles)
or
b) these have proved a popular present from the churched to the de/unchurched
Having seen that dodgy bloke on Neighbours a year or so ago, I’m a bit dubious about the notion of life coaching, but Bruce Stanley over at embody.co.uk sounds intriguing. I believe he spoke at Greenbelt last year, and his course on 'Living Life on Purpose' is available as downloadable MP3s here. If anyone heard Bruce at Greenbelt or knows anything about him please let me know..

Strikes me as another gimmick with little substance. Obviously it's important to invite people back to church, but surely church leaders first need to deal with the issues that have caused people to leave...

Across the western world young communities of faith are embracing new monasticism, a movement that calls for a disciplined spiritual life of radical simplicity. What is it that a contemporary monastic community has to offer the wider church in terms of the values it holds and way of life it models? What part does it play in the church’s mission?
We are delighted that Brother Paolo from the Taizé community will be joining us for the next blah...manchester. Brother Paolo is interested in new monasticism and would like to engage in conversation, share his experiences and identify some similarities between the Taizé community and new monasticism. There will also be a Taizé service in Manchester Cathedral afterwards

Speaking of the worst blog posts of all time, which I wasn't but I am now, check out this from Ruth Gledhill. The gist of the article is that the Church of England have finally made the wise move divesting from Caterpillar- few people would argue this is a bad move as Caterpillar notoriously adapt their bulldozers to making them super efficient at knocking down Palestinian houses. Gledhill however, is not impressed; "As an Anglican myself, this decision provokes anger and shock in me, allied with shame and embarrassment. Have 2000 years of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust and the horrific death toll of suicide bombings in Israel taught us nothing?"
It seems Gledhill, everybody's (least) favourite religious correspondent, has somehow lost all ability to distinguish between the chap pictured on the left and the lad pictured on the right. And what makes this oversight all the more humorous is that in the next post Gledhill writes,
"Some of those who have taken the trouble to comment on my previous blog have questioned whether my objectivity as a news journalist has been compromised by my taking Israel’s side against the action of the Church of England General Synod in backing disinvestment from Caterpillar. I would argue not. I have always been strongly pro-Israeli but as a news reporter it is easy to leave those views “outside the door” when covering Middle East affairs."
If studying literary theory at Cliff taught me anything it taught me that leaving views "outside the door" is NEVER easy!
The move into the new abode has gone well and my new housemates are great. One of them works at Newcastle United Academy and as we sat down to watch the match in our homely lounge the oddest thing happened. Denise got a call, "oh that was Glenn, his family are away for the weekend, so he's coming round to watch the second half" and so I watched the second half of today's rather dismal match (at least from my perspective) sat next to the Newcastle United Manager, it's a funny old world!
