The reason ethical food and clothing costs more is because it's ethical and ethical is by it's nature more expensive than unethical- why else would companies act unethically?) Sometimes however the world order changes and- thanks to the generousity of some great companies- ethical becomes incredibly affordable; you guessed it the People Tree and Howies summer sales have begun!
If you really want to know why ethical products are more expensive you should read "The Undercover Economist" by Tim Harford. Really interesting and covers that exact topic in detail. Basically Harford claims it's not because production is more expensive it's because the so called ethical companies now people who have a preference to buying ethical products will be willing to pay more. Interesting stuff.

DON'T GET ME STARTED!!! Working for one such ethical company I can guarantee that is balls. It is often true of retailers selling ethical products but not of the ethical companies themselves; i.e. Tesco may charge over the odds for fair trade foods because they know some people are willing to pay more, but the companies that supply the products do not, they cannot afford to because the power is in the hand of the retailer not the manufacturer. It's the way free-market economics works and is why wherever possible we should buy direct from ethical companies and not give the profit to supermarkets, who besides Co-op, tend to donate profit to unethical causes...
RANT OVER!!!
